DRY STONE
Since time immemorial, in Els Ports, this popular construction technique has been developed, consisting of building stone walls to terrace land, create shepherd's shelters, delimit properties, and more. The brilliance of the technique lies in the fact that there is no mortar or fixing material between the stones; their own weight and arrangement determine their stability.
The significance of these constructions over the centuries has led to this construction technique being recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
CASTLES, FORTRESSES, AND PALACES
Els Ports is a borderland, which has conditioned its architectural heritage. For centuries, numerous individuals have coveted the dominion and possession of its territory, constructing imposing buildings for defensive purposes. Thus, throughout the region, we find interesting castles, walls, and towers.
Furthermore, the intense commerce that occurred in past centuries led to the establishment of important noble and bourgeois families in the various towns of Els Ports, erecting imposing manor houses and palaces.
RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS
The rich religious heritage of Els Ports allows you to journey through different periods of art history: from buildings that preserve elements of Aragonese Mudéjar, to Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, or Neoclassical constructions. These are true visitable treasures that have survived over the centuries and are authentic museums of the history of this land.
