Mount Bovalar - Tallats Bird Observatory

Natural heritage

The name bovalar, which persists in many towns of Els Ports, refers to the communal rural space that was formerly reserved for animal pastures.

Bovalar Mountain is one of the highest peaks in the municipal district of Cinctorres and is home to a landscape that is very interesting from an ecological perspective. The municipal district of Cinctorres is rich in bird species and for this reason in 2009 it was declared a ZEPA (acronym for special bird protection zone in Spanish). In this area there is an observatory to watch birds native to cliffs and rocky areas.

Cinctorres has a total of 6 observatories for you to enjoy bird watching. They are named after the areas they are located in: crop, pine forest, holm oak forest, river, urban and cliff.

The Creu del Gelat cross stands at the top of Bovalar

Mountain, 1,232 metres above sea level. Nearby, you can also see the Coves del Bovalar caves, the largest pothole in the region.

Hermitage of the Pilar - Font del Bassi

Natural heritage

This religious building was constructed in 1763 by Pascual Serret thanks to the donations he collected. According to documents of the Bishop of Tortosa dating from 1673, there was already a chapel in this spot with the same name.

It has a 6x7 metre floor plan, and features masonry walls and a tile roof. The door is framed by a semicircular

arch. It has a false dome inside and the high altar has a barrel vault. The decoration is very simple with

references to the Virgin.

Close to the chapel is the Font del Bassi fountain, where you could formerly find the spring and an old public washing place.
