Els Ports has managed to preserve the impressive legacy brought by its history. Land of dinosaurs, cave paintings, Roman archaeological sites, castles, churches, battles and palaces, the significance of this region throughout history has meant that nowadays we are able to enjoy a unique heritage.

Going all over Els Ports also implies discovering spectacular dry stone constructions, country houses, chapels and shrines among others. Numerous places inviting us to discover an extraordinary shared history.

VALENCIA-ARAGON-CATALONIA

Els Ports, located in the heart of the ancient Crown of Aragon, has long been a crossroads, and a border as well. This region, bounded since the Middle Ages, has a great historical weight and a remarkably strong personality. The Reconquest of the Kingdom of Valencia, which was born in this region, led to centuries caracterised by rivalry, struggle, wars and battles. The independence of nine villages from Morella in the 17th century, was followed by wars as the Spanish Succession, the French, the Carlist Wars or the Spanish Civil War. Conflicts which have left vital episodes which have marked the history of the region.

Els Ports, with a typical mountain cuisine, is the region of the Valencian Community with the highest number of farms, which creates a unique landscape and provides us with outstanding raw materials. Based on this agricultural heritage, fields, crops, farms and mountains, we can find a gastronomy which has been transmitted from generation to generation and which is being adapted to new trends in order to provide products with a lifetime history an innovative twist.

Being a region crossed by valleys and mountains drawing a stunning ladscape, the passage of time has created a spectacular orography, perfect for those who love nature and tourism. From north to south and from east to west, from La Tinença de Benifassà toVillafranca and from El Maestrat to El Matarranya, forests, rivers, valleys and mountains fill our landscape with green areas. A natural spectacle, which experiences its peak periods during the spring and the autumn.

NATURAL HERITAGE

Els Ports is the ideal scenario for the practice of active sport, thanks to the uniqueness of our topography. Every single town has plenty of hiking trails that allow to discover one-of-a-kind landscapes. Moreover, Els Ports is currently being consolidated as the ideal location for the practice of mountain biking, since the paths of the region combine entertainment for lovers of this sport with bucolic surroundings, with an impressive heritage.

The adventure park Saltapins is the most suitable place for leisure and adventure with the whole family, walking on the trees and enjoying their long zip-lines, right outside Morella. Climbing, speleology, horse riding, organised races, etc. are some of the services ready to be enjoyed in the region.​

CULTURAL HERITAGE

The festive calendar of the Els Ports region includes numerous essential events throughout the year. Unique celebrations that maintain elements dating back to medieval times and have a strong presence in each of the villages. Additionally, in Els Ports, you can find dances and cultural expressions of great importance, some of which have been the origin of many others that emerged later in other places, such as the Warrior Dance of Todolella. These dances also highlight the rich artisanal tradition of the area, with costumes of significant value.

SO FAR, SO CLOSE

The region of Els Ports enjoys a unique location, enviable for many. In the core of a mountain area, with many of its municipalities located above 1,000 meters, and just over 40 minutes from the coast, it is away from crowded big cities, in the very middle of the mountain, where peace and tranquility walk hand in hand to be enjoyed by the people, in landscapes of a singular region.

A REGION OF AGRICULTURE AND FARMING

The inhabitants of Els Ports and their way of speaking, using Valencian as mother tongue, constitute a differentiator element compared to other regions. Furthermore, this is one of the regions from the Valencian Community with a larger number of farms and livestock.
